PETERSBURG — At the annual Chamber of Commerce dinner, Cpl. Derek Anderson was named the Petersburg Sheriff’s Office Hometown Hero. Cpl. Anderson entered the Army in 1988, completing his tour of duty in 1993. He is a veteran of Desert Shield, Desert Storm and the Liberation of Kuwait. He came to Virginia in 1995 and began his career with the Petersburg Sheriff’s Office. Since that time he has held every position in the Sheriff’s Office — shift commander, floor deputy, kitchen deputy, transportation officer and is currently one of the senior deputies in the General District Court.A statement released by Sheriff Vanessa Crawford reads, “Cpl. Anderson always exhibits a willing and positive attitude, takes initiative to address potential challenges that he is faced with while overseeing court operations and inmate transportation, and always demonstrating a desire to master work related tasks. His leadership abilities have identified him as one of the Petersburg Sheriff’s Office deputies to watch. He continues to serve his community with distinction, sets a great example for his family through his work ethic, and the law enforcement community through his dedication to the field.”
